The Foundation for Jewish Heritage is delighted to support the campaign to preserve the remarkable Tempel synagogue in Poolstrasse. This is an iconic Hamburg landmark built at a time when the city was home to one of the leading Jewish communities of Germany. The ambition of the building reflected the confidence of a community that was becoming an integral and vibrant part of Hamburg life. The Tempel congregation also played a key role in the growth of Reform Judaism shaping much of its early traditions that would go on to have a profound influence throughout the Reform movement. While the building is today in a parlous state, significant elements of the original structure remain and point to the potential of what the building might become in the future.
